On Bass...   Rob "Cakey" Clarke

Oh well, my biography, after being influenced by my brothers band I decided I wanted to learn to play an instrument, upon his suggestion “learn bass it’s the easiest” that’s what I did, went to Woolworths and he bought me my first bass, a Kay, £25 a bargain.

After getting my fingers in gear I joined my first band, ‘Vandemon’ formed in the last year of school, I got the gig because I think they were impressed that I could play ‘Hey Joe’ but after loads of rehearsing and doing one gig I left to join my brothers band who decided to do the working men’s club circuit, regular gigs at the time and an excellent place to ‘learn the craft’.

After many line up changes but still with my brother (Paul) the band became ‘Gravity’ a soul and funk cover band doing the likes of ‘Commadores’, Kool and the gang etc. which gave me a whole new outlook on the role of bass in a band, ‘Slaptastic’

The rest is history and I’m far too modest to mention it anyway but after a bit of a sebaticle whilst doing a charity gig I met Sir Grey and finally got the buzz back to splank that bass and once again be the titan that is Cakmeister!

A couple of summers ago, I got a message from someone about about a band that was looking for a bass player. The word was to meet at The Riverside that sunday afternoon for a chat and a drink. I'd heard that it was a good band, decided to find out more and arrived at the pub for 1pm on the sunday. As I walked up to the bar, Grey Cooper turned around and said 'Hi Rob, thanks for coming down, what can I get you to drink?'.
